DID YOUR OVEN DOOR GLASS BREAK?
Domestic kitchen ovens are designed to withstand high temperatures so you may be surprised that the oven door glass can explode without warning, sending glass fragments flying across your kitchen and into your nearly roasted dinner. This spontaneous glass breakage is a phenomenon by which toughened glass (or tempered) may spontaneously break without any apparent reason. For the householder it’s often an alarming and frightening experience.
When tempered oven door glass shatters in this way, it is spectacular, splintering into a million pieces and sometimes being sprayed around a kitchen. While these explosions appear to come out of the blue in most cases that’s not the case. The cause are often microscopic flaws in the glass often caused by the manufacturing process that involves stainless steel rollers. These press minute particles into the glass and over time these can expand creating a minuscule fracture. If this expansion is sufficient, it can cause the glass to explode that is often reported.
There are other causes which can cause the oven door glass to explode, too. A slight tap against an oven shelf, or a tiny scratch caused by cleaning, or even an unlucky nudge from a bag of shopping can have the same effect, later causing the glass to shatter. And ‘later’ is the word, because although the damage has been done, it can be as long as weeks later that the door actually shatters – creating the impression it happened for no reason. It is also the case that the glass can shatter when the oven is not in use, leaving victims baffled about the cause.
Cleaning is a big reason for these explosions as any cleaning products that containing caustic soda (or sodium hydroxide) should be completely avoided as this is corrosive and can scar the glass, making it unstable and prone to fracture. Even worse is that caustic soda becomes more corrosive and potent at higher temperatures so that even the tiniest amount left on the glass and then gets into a scratch, can become very destructive. Always check the active ingredients on all cleaning products before using them on oven door glass.
How to prevent oven door glass breaking, smashing or getting damaged
- Never bump your oven door. The smallest crack or nick could cause a stress fracture that could “explode” at a later time.
- Never slam your oven door.
- Never close your oven door without first making sure your oven racks are all the way in.
- Don’t use the door to close the oven racks. Metal can scratch the glass, causing breakage.
- Never clean with any products that contain caustic soda.
