Description
When it comes to equipping a modern kitchen in Nairobi, few appliances make as much of a difference as a quality hob. Whether you’re building a new home, renovating your kitchen, or replacing a worn-out unit, a hob is the heart of every cooking space. However, brand-new hobs—especially premium brands like Bosch, Siemens, Electrolux, and Miele—can cost a small fortune. That’s where refurbished hobs come in, offering an affordable, reliable, and sustainable alternative for homeowners across Nairobi.
At Hometech Kenya, we specialize in sourcing, testing, and selling high-quality refurbished hobs at prices that make sense for the average Kenyan household. In this article, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about buying refurbished hobs in Nairobi, including the types available, estimated prices, and tips for making the right purchase.
Why Choose a Refurbished Hob?
Many people assume that refurbished means second-rate or unreliable. In reality, professionally refurbished appliances often deliver performance comparable to brand-new units at a fraction of the cost. Here’s why buying a refurbished hob is a smart decision:
1. Significant Cost Savings
A brand-new built-in gas or electric hob from a premium European brand can cost anywhere between KSh 60,000 and KSh 250,000. A refurbished version of the same model typically costs 40% to 70% less, allowing you to enjoy premium quality on a modest budget.
2. Quality Assurance
At Hometech Kenya, every refurbished hob undergoes a thorough inspection process. Our technicians test burners, ignition systems, heating elements, knobs, safety cut-offs, and glass tops before any unit is put up for sale. Faulty parts are replaced, and units are professionally cleaned and polished.
3. Environmental Benefits
Buying refurbished keeps appliances out of landfills and reduces the demand for new manufacturing. It’s a sustainable choice that aligns with the growing global movement toward responsible consumption.
4. Access to Premium Brands
Refurbished markets open the door to high-end brands that may otherwise be out of reach. Many refurbished units originate from Europe, where homeowners upgrade frequently, leaving perfectly functional appliances available at bargain prices.
5. Warranty and Support
Reputable dealers like Hometech Kenya offer warranties on refurbished units, giving you peace of mind that a random second-hand purchase from a classifieds site cannot match.
Types of Hobs Available in Nairobi
Before purchasing, it’s important to understand the different types of hobs and which one best suits your cooking style and kitchen setup:
Gas Hobs
The most popular choice in Kenyan homes. Gas hobs offer instant, controllable heat and work well during power outages. They come in 2-burner, 3-burner, 4-burner, and 5-burner configurations, with cast iron pan supports and flame failure safety devices on premium models.
Electric Hobs
These include solid plate (hotplate) hobs, which are affordable and durable, and ceramic hobs, which feature a smooth glass surface that’s easy to clean and looks elegant in modern kitchens.
Induction Hobs
The most energy-efficient option. Induction hobs use electromagnetic technology to heat pans directly, offering faster cooking, precise temperature control, and enhanced safety since the surface stays relatively cool.
Built-in vs. Freestanding
Built-in hobs are installed flush into your countertop for a sleek, modern look, while freestanding units combine a hob and oven in one appliance.

What to Look for When Buying a Refurbished Hob
To ensure you get value for your money, keep the following factors in mind:
1. Buy from a Reputable Dealer
Avoid buying from unverified sellers on online classifieds. A professional refurbisher tests, repairs, and warranties their units. Hometech Kenya provides documentation, testing records, and after-sales support.
2. Check the Warranty
Always ask about the warranty period. We offer warranties on our refurbished hobs so you can buy with confidence.
3. Inspect the Condition
Look at the glass or steel top for deep scratches or cracks, check that knobs turn smoothly, and confirm that all burners or heating zones ignite and heat properly. For gas hobs, ensure the flame failure device works.
4. Confirm Compatibility
Check the dimensions of your countertop cut-out and whether your kitchen uses LPG or natural gas. Our team can advise on installation requirements.
5. Energy Efficiency
Induction and ceramic hobs consume less power over time. If your kitchen relies heavily on electricity, a refurbished induction hob may save you money in the long run.
